Features: My Tho is an important riverside market town, 5km off the main highway to Vinh Long and it is the Capital of Tien Giang Province. It is 70km southwest of Sai Gon on the banks of the Tien river, a distributary of the Mekong. The drive from Sai Gon is dispiriting nose-to-tail traffic and virtually uninterrupted ribbon development testify to the population pressure in so much of this land, the town has had a turbulent history, it was Khmer until the 17th century, when the advancing Vietnamese took control of surrounding area. In the 18th century Thai force annexed the territory, before being driven out in 1784. Finally the French gained control in 1862.
